Me and my collaborators from ITP Mick Hondlik and Ann Chen created a world map music box. The user can play around with the puzzle pieces and experience different looping instruments and sounds of the world. Each country/region plays it's typical instrument.
In order to have the clips looping at perfect time and melodic harmony, I chose the instruments and created 8 different tracks. Each instrument plays continuously and when someone pulls out a puzzle piece, a light sensor triggers the volume from that track, creating an interesting and unusual live jam session.
Arduino, Max/MSP and Ableton Live were used in the project.
